Additional Details
The purpose of the project is to address the structural conditions of the State Street Bridge over Chemical Coast Branch. The bridge, located on State Street at Mile Post 2.83, is a three-span structure consisting of built-up, riveted steel through girders with partial concrete encasement and fully encased steel rolled floor beams. The bridge has one travel lane and one sidewalk in each direction.
The project was initiated due to the overall poor condition of the bridge superstructure and inadequate vertical under clearance and lateral clearance to the Conrail tracks.
The Preliminary Preferred Alternative for the project includes the following:
- The bridge will be replaced with a two-span structure
- The new bridge will accommodate 12-foot through lanes, 8-foot shoulders, and 6-foot sidewalks in each direction. The shoulders are bicycle-compliant.
- The vertical under clearance of the bridge will be improved and raised to 23 feet to meet Conrail requirements. Conrail agreed to a reduced minimum lateral clearance of 15 feet.
- Public utilities will be relocated as part of the project.
